Dry irons were the first models of iron used by people. They were flat metal plates heated using electricity. These were modified from the traditional models which used burning charcoal to generate heat on the ironing surface. Modern steam irons work on the same principle of dry irons as in heating the metal plate, but it features a small water reservoir inside the body to provide steam which is effective in smoothening out wrinkles and creases.
